Banking and Finance

Our banking and finance practice began in the 1800s with the firm advising the first bank established in Sri Lanka (i.e. the Mercantile Bank) and drafting the law establishing the country’s first indigenous bank (i.e. the Bank of Ceylon Ordinance).

Today, the practice team advises both local and foreign clients on various domestic and cross-border banking and finance matters. We are ranked as a top-tier firm in the area of banking and finance with the team being commended for its extensive and in-depth knowledge in the area, expertise and problem-solving capabilities.

We have also been involved in legislative reform from when we represented the Commercial Banks Association of Ceylon which played a leading role before the Mortgage Commission appointed in 1945 which recommended significant changes to the common law, to more recently providing legal commentary of draft laws and regulations (made available for public comment) for its banking/finance company clients and participating in panel discussions on the impact and interpretation of new law.

The lawyers in our banking and finance practice team often work together with those in the real estate practice team and the dispute resolution practice team at the firm. The combination of knowledge, experience and fresh thinking of the lawyers result in innovative and proactive solutions which address clients’ needs.

From multilateral development banks/financial institutions, bi-lateral lending institutions to both local and foreign licensed banks, non-banking financial institutions and corporates, our clientele includes top-players in their respective fields.
